First Blood Draw = Brave Little Man!

For the past few months, Jackson has been getting a bloody nose every few days or so. I thought he had been bumping his nose or getting hit or SOMETHING.. but I picked him up from school on Thursday and there it was, another nice bloody nose. I have read articles and heard stories about bloody noses being a sign of leukemia and both my mom and I started freaking ourselves out so I called the doc and got him an appointment for today. Jackson was confused. He kept telling me, 'Nuffing is wrong mom, it's just because sometimes my nose gets holes in it but it doesn't even hurt!' We went in and she checked his blood pressure to make sure that wasn't high.. it was perfect. Then she gave me two options: We could either draw blood and they could do a bunch of labs to make sure he doesn't have a blood disorder, or she could just give him some allergy medicine to see if it stopped that way. Even though she thought Jax would freak out at getting blood drawn.. I decided to go that route just to be extra safe. Two nurses came in, one to do it, and one to hold him down. He wanted to sit on my lap instead of lay on the bed.. which I think made him a little more comfortable. I held one hand and the other was occupied by a needle and a bunch of tubes hooking to it. I couldn't believe how good he did! When she poked the needle in, he didn't even say ouch! We tried talking to him but he was so interested in watching the blood come out that he would say a couple words and then look back down. I was so proud of him. He is such a brave and tough boy! If the labs come back normal, she'll prescribe him some nasal allergy meds in hopes that's what it is. We'll find out on Monday. Lets cross our fingers that it's just allergies. :) OH! (We also got on the topic of him being allergic to milk still..) On Sunday when I picked Jax up from his Dad's there was a big glass of milk by the bed and Jax was drinking it. Of course, I freaked out. Monday morning rolled around and what do ya know.. a huge rash on both cheeks and way congested. When he turned 1 and got off formula, I tried giving him milk and he got really congested and got a rash on his face so we figured he was allergic and turned to the oh so loved, Rice Milk. He loves it. My family is kind of, weird? I guess. We drink about a gallon of milk a month. Jake's family on the other hand, drinks a gallon every couple days so I think it was hard for them to grasp the concept that he can't have milk. So when we got on the topic in the office today, I told her that he can eat cheese and yogurt and be just fine, but if it's milk, ice cream, or soft cheeses then he doesn't tolerate it. I had never really knew much about the allergy or why it was that way.. and she informed of something I don't think everyone knows. In milk, ice cream, and soft cheeses, there is a lot of lactic acid. They add enzymes and probiotics to yogurt and hard cheeses and it breaks up the lactic acid.. therefore it's easier for him tolerate. It was awesome to hear that. As soon as we left the doctor's office I called his Dad to tell him. Maybe now he'll understand a little bit more. ;)
