detergent pods...

Also known as DANGER pods!
They're colorful, bite-sized, and potentially lethal.
These little pre-measured detergents were made to be more convenient but in some cases are much more dangerous for children.
I've heard a little now and then about kids thinking these BRIGHT and COLORFUL little packs are candy and getting seriously hurt because of them, but when it came to my home and my kids, I always said they would know better.

Jentri has looked at them before and I made sure to clearly tell her that they are "KA KA!"
I thought she understood until one day...

I was vacuuming and she comes running around the corner spitting and gagging, with a broke open dish wash detergent!
I lost it!
I grabbed the sprayer on our kitchen faucet and sprayed her mouth out so fast!
I made her gargle water and spit it out... or tried at least.
I read the back of the packaging and it stated that if a child eats these, they may need to go to the Emergency Room or to see a Doctor right away.
As you would guess, I was flipping out!

I looked it up and it said the child will have rapid vomiting and may go into a sedated like sleep.
I kept a very close eye on her the rest of the day and she didn't have any vomiting or sleepiness so my thoughts are that she didn't actually ingest it and the liquid gel didn't get on her skin so it didn't affect her at all.
THANK HEAVENS.

Later that night, KSL had a news story about detergent pods and how dangerous they really are.
There have been children that have suffered burns from after a pod burst onto their skin and some have even had to be intubated.
The Poison Control had reported a 17 month old who had bitten into one, vomited and then inhaled the product into their lungs which caused them to have to be ventilated.
It's SO serious and people don't even realize it.
There are children hospitalized DAILY because of these.

One of the companies had reported to a news station a few months ago that they would be changing their packaging but it hasn't happened yet...

Supposedly the new containers will have double lock lids and big warning labels on the front.

It really is scary and so dangerous for these to be any where near reach for children.
It really is common sense as a parent to put all chemicals up out of your children's reach and I know that I will never make that mistake again and I hope that any of you that have kids keep your cleaning products out of reach, too!

I think I'm going to hop on board with the "all natural - home made" cleaners and stick to washing my dishes by hand! Ahhh!

  1. We don't use our dishwasher! I am scared of those things! Calee squirted some carpet cleaner in her mouth and I FREAKED. Ugh, so scary! Glad she's okay!
